A jawan of the Assam Rifles was killed, and four others were injured in a suspected militant attack on a patrol team near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Chanlang district.
Officials said the incident took place around 6: 30 am near the Nampon Nallah under the Nampong circle. Personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling the area where border fencing work was underway, they said.
Preliminary reports said that the suspected militants opened fire on the patrol team, killing Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42 and injuring four others.
Security has been increased in the area following the attack. The injured personnel were evacuated for medical treatment.
Preliminary reports also suggested that the militants belonged to the NSCN (K-YA).
The Assam Rifles paid tribute to the soldier and offered their condolences to his family.
Changlang SP Kirli Padu said that he received information about the incident and directed the officer-in-charge to gather details. “We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it," he said.
The security in the region is sensitive due to the movement of insurgent groups along the international boundary.
