The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several districts of Uttar Pradesh. The state is likely to witness intense rainfall accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
On September 27, the state's eastern parts are set to receive heavy rains while the western part is set to receive very heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The rains are expected to subside from September 28. The Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of rain in 59 districts.
About 27 UP districts, including Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Raebareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Hardoi, Lucknow, Barabanki, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Sambhal and Badaun, are expected to receive rain in the next 24 hours.
Heavy rain is expected in Bareilly, Moradabad, Rampur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Farrukhabad.
The conditions in the state are being caused by a depression developing over the Bay of Bengal along with some Western activity. The depression was centred about 230 kilometres south of Prayagraj early on Saturday. It is likely moving towards south-east Uttar Pradesh and may eventually weaken. The rains began on Thursday and continued till Friday.
The conditions have created flood-like conditions in many parts of the state. One person died after a wall collapsed on them in Shravasti. Power supply in the state has also been affected.
On Saturday, the state received about 125.6 mm of rainfall by morning. The strong winds also damaged crops in some areas.
Schools were closed on Saturday due to the rains. The district administrations have also been put on alert by the UP government. Neighbouring Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi NCR and Jharkhand are also set to receive rains on Sunday.
