The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal crossed Andhra Pradesh’s coast near Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam between 11 pm on Wednesday and 1 am on Thursday.
"The deep depression over north Andhra Pradesh coast moved slowly west-northwestwards with a speed of three km per hour during the past six hours and crossed the coast close to southwest of Kalingapatnam between 11 pm on September 23 and 1 am on September 24," said the Met Department in an official press release on Thursday.
The deep depression further moved west northwestwards and lay centred at 5:30 am today over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 50 km west of Kalingapatnam, 80 km north northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.
"It is very likely to move northwestwards initially, maintaining the intensity of a deep depression for the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually during the subsequent 24 hours," said the Met Department
The weather phenomenon disrupted normal life in several states, bringing strong winds and causing waterlogging in various parts of Andhra Pradesh. Srikakulam and Kalingapatnam experienced gusty winds of up to 75 kmph and torrential rain at the time of landfall. In Vijayawada, continuous rain since morning has flooded low-lying areas.
The widespread rainfall was accompanied by maximum sustained winds with speeds of up to 75 km per hour.
West Bengal too received the effects of the deep depression, with the weather department predicting rains to lash South Bengal until next Friday.
The situation is expected to return to normal by Saturday. An orange alert for heavy rain has been issued for six districts today. Heavy rain is forecast in Dum Dum and Jhargram, with rainfall amounts up to 200 mm. Strong winds with speeds of 50 to 60 km per hour are expected. Kolkata, Bankura, and South 24 Parganas may also experience heavy rain. Purulia, Birbhum, West Bardhaman, and Howrah districts will also experience heavy rainfall.
