A tragic incident unfolded in Delhi's Swaroop Nagar where a teenage girl, approximately 16 years old, was the victim of a brutal gang rape and murder perpetrated by a group including minors and an adult. The discovery of her heavily decomposed and mauled body was made difficult by its state, initially leading authorities to believe it belonged to a man. A pivotal moment in the investigation occurred with the identification of a unique tattoo on the victim's arm, which ultimately led to her recognition by her family. Investigations revealed the motive for the murder was the victim's threat to report the sexual assault, and the family noted her tendency to leave home due to alleged domestic abuse.

When the Delhi Police found a heavily decomposed and mauled body in Swaroop Nagar early this week, they thought it belonged to a man.

A teen girl, believed to be about 16, was gang raped and murdered by a group of minors and one adult man earlier this week. They dumped the body of the girl in an open field.

The body had been left out in the open for several days, and dogs had mauled it before locals spotted the scene and reported it to authorities. Police had found it difficult to ascertain the age or sex of the victim. An arm was missing, the face was not recognisable, the abdomen was decomposed, and there were visible skeletal parts.

One of the investigators told Hindustan Times, “The skull and ribcage were visible, and the right arm was cut off. We couldn’t figure out whether it was a man or a woman; it appeared more to be of a middle-aged man.”

the rape and murder occurred on September 11. Her body was discovered two days later.

Police said that the victim wore a pair of blue jeans. There were also peices of a purple cloth on top covered in mud.

Investigators at the scene also thought that the victim's genitals were mutilated after finding six stab wounds on the body.

One officer decided to take a closer look at the victim at the mortuary.

"An assistant sub-inspector found a tattoo with three stars in a row on the left arm. That was the first turning point in the case as it made us consider the possibility that the body could be of a woman too,” the officer said.

The medical reports later confirmed that the victim had been raped.

When the police visited the girl’s family in Tri Nagar, her father initially denied that the body belonged to his daughter. “We asked if they had any photographs of the girl. The brother-in-law showed some photos on his phone. After scanning a few, there was one with her tattoo: three stars in a row," the officer said.

The girl’s family did not have any of her ID documents, so the victim's exact age is unknown. Police are planning on getting an ossification test done on the body's remains to ascertain her age

Investigators said that the family did not file a missing person complaint since the teenager frequently left home. The girl’s mother lives elsewhere in Delhi due to alleged domestic abuse by the father, Live Hindustan reported. Due to the domestic violence, the teen used to leave home and go with her friends.

The accused in the rape and murder told investigators that the they killed the victim after she threatened to report them to the police for sexual assault.
