Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gurpreet Singh Gopi was shot dead by four armed assailants at Mamdot in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Saturday evening.
According to police, the incident took place around 7.45 pm when Gopi, 45, was riding a motorcycle with his friend Harpreet Singh. The assailants, who were travelling in a car, allegedly chased the two and opened fire.
Gopi sustained critical gunshot injuries and died, while Harpreet was injured and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Gopi was associated with the AAP, while his father, Balkar Singh, was a former Congress leader. Police suspect that an old election-related dispute may have led to the killing.
“The two parties had an old dispute. The attackers have been identified and our teams have been formed. We will arrest them as soon as possible,” SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The officer said the main accused has a criminal background. Police have formed multiple teams to track down and arrest those involved in the killing.
According to media reports, Vicky Maini, the newly elected president of the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat, was also present at the spot along with the victims but escaped unhurt.
