Six people, including five women, were killed and at least 12 others sustained injuries after a private bus rammed into a truck in Telangana's Suryapet district on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred near Kodad mandal at around 4.30 am. The private bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru in Andhra Pradesh when it hit the truck from behind, according to preliminary police investigation.
"Six persons, including five women, died in the accident. At least 12 others, who were injured, have been admitted to a hospital," a senior police official said.
Police said preliminary information indicated that 42 passengers were aboard the bus when the accident occurred.
The truck is suspected to have already crashed into a road divider before the bus rammed into it.
Police and highway patrol teams reached the accident site within 10 minutes of receiving information about the crash.
"It seems the accident was a result of overspeeding by the bus. Further investigation is underway," Suryapet SP Narasimha was quoted as saying by ETV Bharat.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed condolences over the deaths and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families. The chief minister also directed the chief secretary to take necessary measures to ensure advanced medical care for those injured in the accident.
Police said further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
