The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday announced a march from India Gate to Delhi Police headquarters in Jai Singh Marg, Connaught Place, on September 5. The decision was taken during a meeting of CJP's National Working Committee on Monday.
"We have been forced to return to the streets because the Government appears determined to commit a 'vishwasghaat' with Gen-Z, the young generation of this country, and the families who have already lost their children," the CJP stated.
The march would be led by families of deceased NEET victims and victims of police brutality to protest the government's failure to honour the commitments made on July 25, including the promise to withdraw the FIRs against students and protesters.
"With the Government continuing to delay and avoid fulfilling its assurances, the CJP National Working Committee has decided to resume peaceful mobilisation," read a statement by the CJP.
The party alleged that the Centre has been playing delay games, hiding behind technicalities and avoiding giving clear commitments. It pointed out that the Supreme Court on August 18 repeatedly asked the government to provide a list of FIRs registered against protesters nationwide, so that the court could consider quashing them in one go.
"Yet, the Government refused to give a clear commitment to do so. The written assurance from the Government to the CJP is also due," the party stated.
"This cannot continue. Our patience cannot be mistaken for weakness. Our good faith cannot become an opportunity for the Government to betray us," it warned. "If solemn commitments made to the youth of this country mean anything, the Government must honour them, in letter and in spirit."
However, it is not clear if the CJP submitted a formal request to the Delhi Police for permission regarding the proposed march. It also remains to be seen whether the Delhi Police would grant permission for the proposed rally if and when the CJP submits its request.
It should be noted that the CJP did not seek police approval for its July 20 Chalo Sansad march from Jantar Mantar to the Parliament. On July 19, Delhi police also clarified that it did not grant permission for the same.
Ahead of the Chalo Sansad protest, Delhi Police also issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning gathering of five or more people, except at the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar.
