Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged with the top rank for social media reach among all Union ministers.

This matter came up at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, which reviewed Union ministers' social media reach by evaluating performance metrics from their official handles.

This comes after reaching out to people across generations—particularly Gen Z—became a key focus of the BJP-led government, in light of the anti-NEET paper leak protests weeks ago.

Notably, the social media outreach assessment also took into account the traction generated by political leaders across the spectrum—from the top leadership of various parties to grassroots-level leaders across major social media platforms, a News18 report said.

It added that the online performance of the ministers was tracked from May 1 to August 15—the time when social media was flooded with information related to the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) anti-NEET paper leak protests.

Among the key parameters tracked on Facebook, X, and Instagram were the average number of posts put out each day, total engagement, average engagement per post, total and average likes, follower count, and the overall level of interaction generated by each minister.

Indeed, PM Modi often reached out to students via social media in the wake of the protests, adopting a more personal tone alongside the mobile-first selfie-style format that went viral. He also switched from the use of 'mitron' (friends in Hindi) to 'friends' (in English itself) to address audiences in such videos.

The timing of certain posts near midnight also went viral, and were chalked as an addition to the BJP government's overall focus on not improving its social media outreach with more than just follower counts for each leader.

In that regard, in his Independence Day address, the PM also announced a slew of youth-centric initiatives, such as free online coaching, an AI skilling programme, a sports talent hunt, and an expansion of the civil defence network.

He also highlighted opportunities for young people in sectors ranging from manufacturing and space to nuclear energy and semiconductors.
