In an age of algorithms and artificial intelligence, giving the young more information is not enough. Schools must impart knowledge, families must rediscover conversation, and society must equip today’s children with the judgement they will need to shape tomorrow’s world.

“Knowledge is power” has survived for centuries because it captures an enduring truth. But the digital age forces us to ask a question earlier generations rarely had to confront. When information becomes virtually unlimited, does more of it necessarily produce more knowledge? And does knowledge, in turn, produce wisdom?

The question has acquired real urgency.

Across countries, young people have demonstrated an extraordinary ability to organise, communicate and mobilise through digital platforms, from Bangladesh’s student led upheaval and Kenya’s Gen Z protests to Nepal’s youth turbulence and India’s recent anger over examinations and employment. Digital platforms did not necessarily create these grievances, but they changed the speed, scale and structure through which grievances could be communicated and mobilised.

The circumstances differ in each case, and legitimate grievance must never be confused with manipulation. Young citizens have every right to question institutions and demand accountability. Indeed, that is integral to democracy.

But these events highlight something larger.

A generation is coming of age for whom the smartphone is not merely a communication device. It is a newspaper, library, television channel, political forum, classroom and, increasingly, an artificial intelligence assistant, all combined in one screen. And never has so much information reached so many people so quickly. The harder question is who teaches them what it all means?

Information is not knowledge

Information and knowledge are not synonymous. Information is the raw material from which knowledge is built and knowledge emerges only when that information is tested against evidence, connected with what is already known, and placed within historical, scientific and social context. That is why formal education remains indispensable. There is a seductive assumption today that because almost any fact can be retrieved through a search engine or increasingly generated by an AI platform, the traditional discipline of learning has somehow become less important.

The logic may actually be just the opposite.

A student who has never seriously studied history cannot easily recognise when history is being distorted. One without grounding in science will struggle to separate evidence from scientifically sounding misinformation. Without mathematics and statistics, numbers may look impressive simply because they appear precise. Without language and literature, the ability to understand nuance, irony, argument and persuasion weakens. Without civics, institutions can appear as abstractions rather than products of history, law, compromise and accumulated experience.

The answer to information overload, therefore, lies in deeper education rather than less of it. Search engines and AI platforms can return an answer in seconds, but they cannot supply the intellectual discipline required to judge whether that answer makes sense and that still has to be studied and built, one subject at a time.

This matters particularly in a country as large and diverse as India. Our connectivity has expanded much faster than educational opportunities becoming uniform. A child with a smartphone in a metropolitan school and one in a remote district may enter much the same information universe, but not necessarily with the same educational foundations for interpreting what they encounter. Digital access without corresponding intellectual capacity can therefore deepen, rather than erase, vulnerability.

We have invested enormously in the infrastructure that delivers information. The emerging challenge is whether we are investing sufficiently in the human infrastructure required to understand it.

The fourth teacher

For generations, three institutions played a powerful role in shaping the young. The family, the teacher and the community. Parents taught values. Teachers imparted organised knowledge. Communities transmitted norms and accumulated experience.

Today, there is a fourth influence competing for the same young mind. The algorithm. And it operates on a fundamentally different logic.

A parent asks what is good for the child. A teacher asks what the student needs to learn. A responsible society asks what kind of citizen it wishes to nurture. The commercial interests behind many algorithms ask, above all, what will keep the user engaged. And this is the distinction that matters. Digital platforms expose young people to extraordinary knowledge and opportunity. But the same systems can amplify outrage, misinformation, conspiracy theories and deliberately manipulated narratives.

Generative AI adds another dimension. Images can be manufactured, voices cloned, videos altered and persuasive arguments generated instantly and at scale. The old challenge was finding information. The emerging challenge is deciding what deserves to be believed.

Teaching children how to judge

This is where schools may have to undertake one of the most important educational shifts of the digital age. Not by replacing mathematics, science, history, literature or civics with a fashionable new subject called “digital literacy”. Those subjects are precisely what provide the foundations upon which judgement rests. What schools must increasingly teach is the ability to apply that knowledge to the information environment that the students inhabit every day. We might call this digital judgement.

Take a viral video into the classroom and ask where it originated. Take a dramatic photograph and ask how its authenticity can be established? When a widely circulated statistic comes up, the useful question is simply what its original source is. Two contradictory accounts of the same event, placed side by side, start a discussion as to what can actually be verified. An emotionally provocative social media post invites a different kind of scrutiny as to who benefits if it is believed, what has been left out, and why might someone want the reader to feel angry? And when the answer comes from an AI system rather than a person, one question matters more than any other. How do you know this is correct?

Telling children what to believe would be dangerous in any democracy. The harder and more valuable task is teaching them how to decide what deserves belief. The vulnerability is not confined to the young. Adults inhabit the same information environment. But children have the additional disadvantage of entering it while their intellectual reference points are still being formed. Paradoxically, artificial intelligence may therefore make teachers more important and relevant. When information was scarce, the teacher was involved in spreading it and making pupils aware of it. When information becomes abundant, the teacher increasingly becomes its interpreter. But interpretation is impossible without mastery of the subject itself. The history teacher must still teach history. The science teacher must still teach evidence and scientific method. The mathematics teacher must still develop numerical reasoning. The literature teacher must still build comprehension, language and the ability to encounter different human perspectives. A child cannot fact-check the world without first knowing something about the world.

Education systems should therefore resist the tempting proposition that memory, disciplined study and accumulated knowledge have become obsolete simply because information can now be retrieved instantly. Memory supplies intellectual reference points. Knowledge provides context. Critical thinking has to operate upon something. It cannot exist in an intellectual vacuum. The classroom of the future therefore needs both the rigour of traditional learning and the judgement required for a radically different information environment. India should make digital judgement a learning outcome across subjects rather than merely introduce another digital literacy course.

Bringing the family back in

Schools cannot carry this responsibility alone. Technology has also quietly displaced another institution from parts of children’s lives and that’s the family. Parents sometimes withdraw from their children’s digital world because the children understand the technology better than they do. Grandparents may feel even more disconnected. But knowing how to operate technology is not the same as knowing how to live. A teenager may understand a social media platform better than a grandparent. The grandparent may understand deception, disappointment, anger, compromise, loyalty, failure and consequence considerably better than the teenager. And those are not obsolete skills. They are components of wisdom. Perhaps one of the quieter mistakes of the digital age has been to confuse technological fluency with maturity. Parents and grandparents do not therefore need to become technology experts. Families need to recover something much older which is conversation.

What did you see today, and who posted it? Asking why they posted it is often more revealing than asking what it said. What evidence backs it up, and what might the other side say? Even a moment's pause helps. What could happen if everyone reacted immediately, before any of these questions were asked? Such conversations build something no parental control application can install which is judgement.

Beyond bans

Some societies have responded to concerns about children and social media through age restrictions and tighter controls. Such measures may have a role, particularly for younger children. But prohibition cannot become the principal strategy. Eventually, the child enters the information environment. The question is what happens then. A society that shields a child from social media until a particular age without teaching that child how algorithms, misinformation, persuasion and generative AI work, may merely postpone the inevitable vulnerability.

The more durable defence is cognitive. Teach young people how manipulation works before they encounter it. Teach them to pause before forwarding. Teach them that virality is not evidence. That popularity is not truth. That thousands of accounts expressing something with absolute certainty can still be wrong. And, perhaps most importantly, that disagreement is not evidence of hostility.

These are not merely digital skills. They are democratic ones. Democracy depends upon citizens questioning governments, challenging institutions and demanding reform. But it also depends upon some shared capacity to distinguish evidence from fabrication. When that capacity weakens, legitimate grievances become easier to manipulate. Criminal networks, hostile actors, extremists, political interests and unethical commercial entities can exploit anger, deepen divisions and manufacture the appearance of consensus.

Young people protesting is not, in itself, the problem. The real risk lies elsewhere. Legitimate grievance can be redirected by people the protesters never see, toward objectives they never chose. That calls for teaching judgement, not obedience.

The children who will inherit the world

There is a larger reason why this matters most. The children navigating these screens today will not remain children. They will become tomorrow’s voters and political leaders, teachers and entrepreneurs, scientists and soldiers, administrators and judges, journalists and engineers, parents and policymakers. The judgements they learn to make today will eventually become decisions that shape institutions, economies, democracies and societies. The quality of judgement we cultivate in classrooms and homes today will become part of the quality of decision making in the world tomorrow. And that transforms the issue. This is no longer merely a debate about children and social media. Nor is it simply about misinformation, screen time or whether particular platforms should be restricted.

It is about preparing a generation to exercise responsibility in an information environment unlike anything humanity has previously experienced.

For much of human history, information was scarce. The digital revolution solved that problem spectacularly. We are now discovering the next one.

Information is abundant. Knowledge still requires effort. Wisdom remains scarce.

The societies that prosper in this century may not necessarily be those whose children have access to the most advanced technology. Almost every connected society will eventually have access to powerful digital tools. They will be societies whose young people learn to combine three things, the knowledge built through rigorous education, the judgement required to navigate the digital world, and the wisdom transmitted through human experience.

Schools must impart the first and increasingly cultivate the second. Families, teachers and communities must help transmit the third. Technology can support all three, but it is no substitute for any of them.

Every generation has had to learn to judge. But today’s children may be the first who must learn to do it while navigating an information environment personalised by algorithms, increasingly populated by synthetic content, and capable of turning information, anger or grievance into collective action almost instantaneously.

The smartphone in a child’s hand will grow more powerful. Artificial intelligence will increasingly answer questions that once required hours of research. Tomorrow’s devices may have access to more information than any teacher, parent or grandparent could possibly accumulate in a lifetime. But knowing an answer and understanding what it means, remain profoundly different things. And that leaves us with perhaps the most important educational question of the digital age.

When the screen can tell our children almost anything, who will teach them what is worth knowing, what is worth believing and what is worth doing?

The answer must still lie in education, family and human experience. Because the children learning to make those distinctions today, will make the decisions that shape our world tomorrow.
