A deep depression over West Bengal and Bangladesh is set to trigger widespread torrential rain across eastern, central, and northern India, with the IMD issuing red alerts for Odisha and Jharkhand and orange alerts for North Indian hilly regions. A deep depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is set to trigger widespread torrential rain across eastern, central, and northern India over the coming days, according to a warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system developed from a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and is moving inland in a northwesterly direction.
The IMD has issued a red alert for parts of Odisha and Jharkhand, warning that isolated areas could receive over 20 cm of rainfall within 24 hours. Districts facing extremely heavy rain include Purba Medinipur, Jhargram, and Bankura in West Bengal, along with Balasore and Keonjhar in Odisha. Heavy to very heavy downpours are also forecast for Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
As the depression progresses further inland over the week, the intense rain belt is expected to shift westward. States including Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana are slated to experience significant rainfall.
Meanwhile, hilly regions in North India—specifically Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—have been placed under an orange alert. Forecasters warned that sustained heavy rain could trigger landslides, flash floods, localised waterlogging, and major travel disruptions across mountain corridors. Widespread rainfall is also expected across northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Meteorological officials have advised residents in vulnerable districts to exercise extreme caution, avoid waterlogged zones, and track local weather updates. Local administrations across eastern and northern states have been instructed to monitor rising river levels and prepare for potential emergency responses as the monsoon intensifies.
