The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rain in 16 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The downpour will be accompanied by strong winds that can lash up to 80 kilometres per hour.
A low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas, which is currently centred about 20 km south-southwest of Kolkata and west of West Bengal. This will cause heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
According to the Meteorological Department data, record-breaking extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm or more) was recorded in Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha in the past 24 hours.
Besides the low-pressure phenomenon, additional systems such as the cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh, an active cyclonic circulation over southern Haryana, and a western disturbance are strengthening monsoon winds across the country. The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall in the western Himalayan regions and heavy rainfall in the plains of northwest India will continue this week.
Heavy rain is expected in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab from August 14 to 19. There is an alert of torrential rain in eastern Uttar Pradesh till August 18, while Rajasthan will see heavy rain on Friday.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall for northeastern regions of India with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya may receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall.
Odisha rain
Heavy rain lashed Odisha for the last 24 hours as the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a "depression" and triggered flood fears in the northern districts of the state, the IMD said on Thursday.
The IMD has issued a 'red warning' (take action) of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Odisha.
While issuing the 'red warning' (take action) of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Odisha on Thursday, the IMD said that Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand would also be impacted by the ongoing wet spell caused by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.
Keeping in view the weather conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the North Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha-West Bengal-Bangladesh coast till August 14.
