After the recent cabinet expansion, everyone thought Siddaramaiah has been sidelined when most of his supporters missed becoming the ministers. Discontent was brewing among the Siddaramaiah supporters who accused CM D.K. Shivakumar ignoring the former chief minister. Then came a surprise today during the first day of the monsoon session. Yathindra Siddaramaiah has now taken charge as the Leader of the House in the Legislative Council.
Yathindra, who was recently inducted into the Shivakumar cabinet as Urban Development Minister, assumed the post within two months of becoming a minister for the first time.
As the Legislative Council proceedings began, pro-tem Chairman Puttanna announced that Yathindra had been nominated as the Leader of the House. The announcement was made as per the direction of Shivakumar, following which members across the House thumped their desks.
With the appointment, Shivakumar will lead the government in the Assembly, while Yathindra will represent the government in the Council.
From medicine to politics
Yathindra’s political journey was far from planned. A qualified doctor with an MBBS and MD, he had largely stayed away from politics and pursued his medical profession. He lived in Bengaluru with his mother Parvathi Siddaramaiah and had shown little inclination to enter electoral politics.
The death of his elder brother Rakesh Siddaramaiah changed that trajectory. Yathindra subsequently became more actively involved in his father’s political affairs and eventually entered electoral politics.
In 2018, he was elected from Varuna, the constituency long associated with Siddaramaiah. In 2023, he vacated the seat for his father, who returned to the Assembly.
Yathindra was subsequently elected to the Legislative Council and continued to play an important role in managing political and constituency-related affairs on behalf of his father.
From MLC to minister, and now Leader of the House
Yathindra’s elevation has been rapid. He is currently the only minister in the state Cabinet from the Legislative Council.
His appointment as Leader of the House in the Council adds another significant responsibility to his political career. The post was earlier held by former minister B. Bose Raj.
A new political test
The responsibility comes at a politically sensitive time, with the Opposition expected to aggressively raise issues against the government during the ongoing session.
As Leader of the House in the Council, Yathindra will have to defend the government’s position, coordinate with members of the treasury benches and respond to Opposition attacks in the Upper House.
The Legislative Council has traditionally been regarded as a forum for detailed debate and deliberation. Its political character can often differ from that of the Assembly, making the Leader of the House a key link between the government and the Upper House.
For Yathindra, the appointment marks another unexpected turn in a political career that began almost by circumstance.
From a doctor who had little interest in politics to an MLA, MLC, minister and now Leader of the House in the Legislative Council, his journey has taken a distinctly political turn.
Karnataka will now see Siddaramaiah resigned in May this year to make way for D.K. Shivakumar to become chief minister, he also recently announced retirement from electoral political after 2028. His son being elevated to the position of leader in Council seen both as positive development by his supporters and dynastic politics by the opposition parties.
