The flood situation in Assam continues to remain critical as the death toll reaches 100. Over 1,37,500 people are currently affected in the state.
Several districts across Assam, including Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, and Sivasagar, are completely deluged.
Two more deaths were recorded on Sunday. One person each drowned in floodwaters in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts during the last 24 hours, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
Golaghat is the worst-hit district, with nearly 70,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with around 40,000 and Jorhat with more than 16,000.
The situation has improved slightly since Saturday, when nearly 1.5 lakh people were affected across eight districts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assessed the damages caused by the ongoing floods in the affected districts. CM said that the assessment will document damage to houses, livestock, and other losses caused by floods. The entire exercise is expected to be completed by August 31.
The administration is operating 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres in six districts, where 49,061 affected people are currently taking shelter, the ASDMA said.
During the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 710.44 quintals of rice, 127.85 quintals of dal, 38.34 quintals of salt and 3,773.7 litres of mustard oil among flood-affected people.
As many as 456 villages remain inundated, while 11,933.46 hectares of cropland have been damaged, the ASDMA said.
Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in several districts.
Dhansiri at Golaghat and Numaligarh, and Kushiyara at Sribhumi, are currently flowing above the danger level, according to the ASDMA.
The floods have also affected 43,331 domestic animals and poultry across the state.
IMD forecast heavy rainfall
The India Meteorological Department has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh from August 9 to 11, while Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive rainfall on August 10 and 11.
Rainfall has been predicted over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on August 11.
“Fairly Widespread to Widespread rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh during 12th-15th August; Assam & Meghalaya on 9th August and during 12th-15th August; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 9th-10th August and during 12th-13th August," read IMD's press release.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on 11th August. Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh are also likely to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days.
