Heavy rain lashed the national capital on Thursday morning, offering much-needed relief from the excessive heat in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, forecasting moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the day.
Active monsoon conditions have prompted a yellow alert for all of Delhi-NCR through August 10, warning residents of localised waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
A red alert has been issued by IMD for areas with moderate to heavy rain spells, including Central, East, New Delhi, North West, South East, and West Delhi.
In Gurugram, the early morning rain triggered waterlogging and traffic snarls across key stretches including the Delhi-Jaipur expressway.
Severe traffic snarls were reported at Narsinghpur, Manesar and Bilaspur on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway.
An orange alert has been issued in Noida and Ghaziabad.
Gurugram and Faridabad, meanwhile, remain under a yellow alert, with light rainfall expected over the next few hours.
IMD issues warning for other states
IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in seven states and heavy rain likely over several others, including West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
People in Bihar, UP and Uttarakhand have been urged to exercise caution as the heavy rains could trigger flash flooding in several regions.
Heavy rain is also forecast in some areas of western Madhya Pradesh on August 6th and 8th. Heavy rain is also expected in some areas of Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh on August 5th and 7th, and in some areas of western Madhya Pradesh on August 7th.
For the next three days, heavy rain is forecasted in Kerala and Karnataka as well. Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, South Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.
Also, IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
