Three teenage boys were arrested by the Assam police and charged in the brutal rape and murder case of a 16-year-old girl  in the Hailakandi district.

The incident has triggered widespread backlash in Hailakandi, with protestors blocking the National Highway 6 for two consecutive days. They demand capital punishment for the accused.

The arrested men are between 17 and 19 years of age. Police have said that five young men were initially detained on Sunday, following which three of them were formally arrested.

“One of them is 17-and-a-half years old, but considering the brutality of the case, we have appealed to the court to try him as an adult,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amitabh Sinha.

The accused have been booked under Section 65(1), Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with rape of a girl below the age of 16 and murder respectively. Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, 2012 was also added.

Additional Superintendent of police Darpan Baruah said that as the investigation progresses, more sections might be added to the list.

According to the police, it is alleged that one of the accused and the victim were in a relationship.

The victim’s family alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered.

According to the family, they had gone to a function at a nearby relative’s house. Reports indicate that the girl was also present at the function. However, she allegedly left around 10:30 pm after arguing with her cousin.

They found the girl lying in a pool of blood at her residence. The incident took place around 11 pm on Saturday.

“We thought we’d bring some food for her later, but when we reached home around an hour later, we were horrified to see her body,” said the mother, adding that it was unrecognisable.

The victim’s family accused the assailants of using heavy household items and utensils to harm the victim. The officers have confirmed that the victim sustained multiple severe injuries.
