A 40-year-old psychiatrist allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the fifth floor of her apartment in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Police said that the woman, identified as Dr Hemika Agarwal, allegedly jumped from her flat in Officer City-2 Society in the Raj Nagar Extension area on Sunday.

Residents of the housing complex and other bystanders saw her and immediately rushed to help and took her to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

Reports say that Agarwal was struggling with depression and emotional distress since her divorce around one and a half years ago. Her family told police that the incident severely affected her mental health.

Agarwal’s father, Dr R Chandra, who is also a known psychiatrist in Ghaziabad, said that his daughter was dealing with depression and significant mental stress after their separation 18 months ago.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are probing the death from all angles.

Officials also said that they are recording statements of relatives and other relavant persons while evidence from the scene is also being scrutinised. The doctor is believed not to have left any suicide note, and police have not officially confirmed the recovery of one.
