Assam’s flood situation remains critical, leaving thousands of residents affected. Latest official figures show the death toll has reached 78, while seven districts remain submerged.
The severely affected areas include the districts of Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Biswanath, and Kamrup (Metropolitan).
Over 3 lakh people were affected by the floodwaters.
More than 21,500 hectares of crop area have been severely impacted by floods. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters continue to impact 21 revenue circles and 551 villages.
Among the affected districts, Charaideo is the worst-hit with 1,37,561 people affected.
More than 16,500 displaced people are taking shelter in 71 relief camps, while another over 72,000 people are being assisted through 30 relief distribution centres.
Infrastructure damage remains extensive, impacting embankments, roads, and schools. Official ASDMA figures show more than 11,000 animals washed away and 17,000 heads of livestock affected.
Urban areas too were affected by the floodwaters. The impacted areas include Padumbari, Boragaon, Excelcare Hospital, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Satgaon, Beharbari, Hatigaon, Wireless, Jorabat and Kamarkuchi near Zubeen Khetra.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday called on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the flood situation.
Though floodwaters have receded, many are unable to return as their houses have either been damaged or filled with mud and silt.
Shah assured him of all possible assistance from the Centre for relief and restoration efforts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms for the next three days in isolated places of the state as well as in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, which could affect the districts in Assam bordering these two states.
