25 districts have been impacted by floods in Assam with an estimated 11,45,003 people affected, and close to 30,000 people evacuated. 78 people have died so far in the floods. Close to 13,000 houses have also been damaged in the floods with 71,395 people taking shelter in 216 relief camps set up in flood-affected areas.

A compensation amount of Rs 9 lakh will be provided to the next of kin affected in the Assam floods. The families of missing persons will also be entitled to this amount in a phased manner.

An inter-ministerial team from the Centre is expected to visit Assam to assess the damage in the days to come and work towards rebuilding affected areas. The districts of upper Assam have been the worst affected by floods. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma apprised Union Home Minister Amit Shah of the situation.

The state government has sought a support package from the Centre to cover relief, livelihood restoration, housing and infrastructure for Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat.

A district-wise construction plan to rebuild roads, bridges, schools, health and power infrastructure was also put forward in the flood review discussion.

A Northeast disaster risk reduction mechanism will also be established to strengthen regional coordination, with respect to disaster management in Assam and its neighbouring states.

Electricity is yet to be restored in several districts. Authorities are waiting for water levels to recede and assess safety conditions before restoring more transformers to the grid in various power stations. Consumers without electricity have declined by a further 30 per cent.

Several organisations and individuals have also come forward to donate funds to the Assam Chief Minister’s relief fund to assist flood-affected victims.

Sajjan Jindal of JSW Steel donated Rs 5 crore to the CM Relief Fund along with other organisations within and outside the state. Savitri Jindal, Chairman Emeritus of the OP Jindal Group hails from Assam as well, which explains the company's generous donation towards helping flood-affected victims. Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana has also donated Rs 11 lakh to the relief fund.

Heavy rains since July 19 in Nagaland and Upper Assam have resulted in a flood-like situation, due to which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
