BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has triggered a major backlash after she shared a lengthy post referring to young Hindu women as the “generation gutter.”
In an Instagram story, the actress and MP said that today’s women are making “rebellious decisions”
“They may not be homemakers, but they proudly flaunt their independence.” She also criticised youth who lived off their parents’ earnings.
Her statement comes after the CJP and youth protests forced the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.
In her post, Kangana wrote, "The most shocking behaviour is of young Hindu women who want to imitate the lives of independent career women, without earning that freedom. Women who are truly independent make rebellious decisions, have bold opinions, take unconventional career steps and take responsibility for their actions. They have to do this because they are on their own. They do not do it at the expense of their parents or family. There is a new generation of so-called Westernised Indian women. I call them 'Generation Gutter'."
"Some of them have nothing to offer to the system; they are not good at studies, but they are too ugly and corrupt to even become household stewards. Yet, they proudly flaunt their freedom to take drugs, drink alcohol or have sex with countless people and shamelessly survive on their parents' earnings. They constantly fight for a free life without actually being free. A small reminder: a free life has to be earned. If you try to live a free life without responsibility, you are just a spoiled person. Gutter Chaap," she concluded.
Her comments quickly went viral and drew sharp criticism. Some, however, supported her statements.
Many accused the BJP MO of hypocrisy and drew attention to her history of making controversial statements.
Several opposition leaders also criticised her statements while speaking to IANS.
JMM MP Mahua Maji said, "No attention should be paid to her comments. She always makes absurd statements...''
LoP Tikaram Juli says, "Kangana Ranaut has said that this protest was disgusting, this protest was wrong. On this, I would like to say — was it good that the children who raised their voices committed suicide? Was it good that the children's papers were leaked? On that, Kangana did not say a single word"
Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla says, "She is not serious about the people of India, the country, or its citizens...''
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat says, “I would certainly like to say two things, as far as her political remarks are concerned: no one takes Kangana Ranaut seriously, which is precisely why she has been a figure of ridicule from the very beginning.”
Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari said, "Now let it be. We do not want to say anything about that 'devi'. There are others who will respond to her. She keeps saying things like the country became independent in 2014... We are embarrassed by what people think of her."
Congress MP Imran Masood said, "How educated is Kangana Ranaut? Does she even know anything? First, let her show us her degree. How educated is she that she is distributing knowledge to students?"
