The Delhi Police have responded to yet another viral claim that had caused panic and outrage among internet users amidst the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party-led protests at Jantar Mantar.
The Delhi Police have come out with an official clarification on internet claims that alleged that the passports of people directly involved in violence during the CJP protests could be cancelled. The department on Thursday evening categorically denied the claim and warned the public against falling for such malicious fake news.
"The viral claim is misleading. No such decision has been announced to cancel the passports of CJP protestors. Citizens are advised not to share or amplify misleading posts and to rely only on official information," a reply from the official handle of DCP New Delhi on X read. It was on the post of one Vikram Pratap Singh that the reply was posted. "Good move Passports will be cancelled for all who were involved in Hooliganism at CJP protest," the original post read.
Amidst the protests, the police department have, however, identified and blocked 480 social media handles that were allegedly being operated from Pakistan. According to the Delhi Police, these handles were running coordinated misinformation campaigns and attempting to mislead students and young people by spreading rumours and false claims.
Leaves cancelled
Delhi Police have cancelled all routine leaves of their personnel with immediate effect in view of the prevailing law-and-order situation in the capital, police sources said on Friday.
The order issued by the police headquarters on Thursday has been circulated to the DCPs of all the districts, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and other senior officers, they said.
According to the communication, no routine leave, including casual leave and earned leave, would be granted until further orders, and only genuine emergency leave would be considered after due verification by the competent authority.
The order also imposed restrictions on police personnel attending training programmes or courses without prior approval from the commissioner of police.
