The Delhi High Court will hear a public interest litigation (PIL) demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incidents of violence during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march on July 20 organised by the Cockroach Janata Party.
The petition, filed by Satish Kumar Aggarwal, a former Vice-President of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, seeks transfer of all FIRs registered by the Delhi Police in connection with the incident to the central agency.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia admitted the plea and listed the matter for hearing on Friday. The petition has mentioned the Union of India, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Government of NCT of Delhi as respondents.
The petitioner alleges that the protest turned violent on Monday, resulting in stone-pelting, injuries to police personnel, attacks on journalists, damage to public and private property, obstruction of emergency services and attempts to move towards Parliament House.
He further asks the court to direct authorities to identify all persons responsible for violence, vandalism, obstruction of emergency services, and damage to public and private property, register FIRs wherever required, and take action in accordance with law.
Hundreds of students have been protesting at Jantar Mantar since July 20, when police stopped a "Sansad Chalo" march and used batons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. Several protesters and police personnel were injured during the clashes.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and other competitive entrance tests.
