Just a day after the Chalo Sansad march by Cockroach Janta Party, the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi grouped its leaders and marched to PM Modi's residence to protest the paper leak issue on Tuesday and seek the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a sudden dharna outside the PM's residence to protest the paper leak row and the attacks on students while they were protesting. However, soon the Congress leaders were dragged away and detained.
According to political analysts, the Congress would have thought that this is the opportune moment to corner the government by gearing up for a political protest and building up pressure against the Centre, which is already facing criticism from people on ethanol policy, paper leaks and horse trading of legislators.
The Congress had played it safe till now by not amplifying the CJP party's voice but supporting the students cause and showing concern towards them. The party has framed it's own campaign, Chhatron ki Goonj, to reach out to students and sensitise them about what they believe is the lack of concern from the government.
Congress leaders think the prolonged protests and Sonam Wangchuk's fast has created anxiety against the government among a section of people giving rise to anti-incumbency, say analysts.
The party leaders also think that this is the best opportunity to ride the wave against government and hold it accountable. Congress leaders have been often heard saying that Narendra Modi-led BJP will not be able to complete its third tenure.
