An IPS trainee officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, M. Udaya Krishna Reddy, has reportedly attempted suicide, days after a female trainee filed a sexual harassment complaint against him. The complaint, lodged on July 18th, details accusations of sexual harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation, and blackmail spanning the preceding two months. The SVPNPA has suspended Reddy following a preliminary inquiry by its Privileges Committee, which found the allegations warranted disciplinary action after reviewing evidence including CCTV footage. Reddy, who had a prior career as a constable and successfully cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his fifth attempt, had expressed faith in the legal process prior to the alleged suicide attempt. The academy has clarified that the ultimate decision regarding his continuation in service lies with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

An IPS trainee officer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad reportedly attempted suicide on Monday afternoon, two days after a fellow trainee officer lodged a sexual harassment complaint against him. He was rushed to a private hospital in SR Nagar, and his condition is reportedly critical.

M. Udaya Krishna Reddy, an IPS trainee, made headlines after a woman trainee officer filed a complaint at Attapur police station, which has jurisdiction over the National Police Academy campus, on July 18.

The FIR states that the complainant accused Reddy of sexual harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation and blackmail over the previous two months. Hyderabad police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar stated that the police would first record the victim's statement before taking further action.

Meanwhile, the SVPNPA suspended Reddy after its Privileges Committee reportedly conducted a preliminary inquiry and reached a prima facie view that the allegations warranted disciplinary action. The committee is learnt to have examined CCTV footage and other material before arriving at its preliminary findings.

Hours before the alleged suicide attempt, the trainee officer had said that he had full faith in the legal process and believed that justice would prevail. Police have not officially linked his suicide attempt to the academy's disciplinary action.

Udaya Krishna Reddy had been hailed as a role model because he served as a constable in the Andhra Pradesh Police from 2013 to 2018. He reportedly quit his job after being publicly humiliated by a circle inspector and subsequently began preparing for the Civil Services Examination.

He cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in his fourth attempt in 2023, securing a position in the Indian Railway Management Service. He improved his rank in his fifth attempt in 2024 and was selected for the Indian Police Service. He studied in a Telugu-medium government school before switching to English for his UPSC preparation.

While announcing the suspension, SVPNPA officials clarified that the final decision on Reddy's continuation in service would rest with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the cadre-controlling authority for the Civil Services.
