Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office in the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Preliminary findings suggest that the senior IPS officer may have died by suicide by shooting himself with his service pistol.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause and circumstances of his death. His body has been shifted to GB Hospital in Agartala for post-mortem examination.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, took charge as the state's DGP in May 2025. Before this, he served as DGP (Intelligence) with the additional charge of ADGP (Law and Order) from January 1, 2024. 

Prior to his postings in Tripura, Dhankar had a long stint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he led investigations into several high-profile cases, including the Nirav Modi bank fraud case.

Dhankar also served as the chairman of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Union Home Ministry to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He was also part of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-04.

He was conferred the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service for his service in the police force.
