A major fire broke out on Saturday at the ancestral residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Bayron Biswas in the Dak Bungalow area of Shamshergunj in Murshidabad district. Biswas, who was present at his office inside the factory on the same premises, was rescued by police and the fire force. He had sustained injuries in the fire and was taken to a private nursing home nearby.
His condition is said to be stable. The MLA is likely to be shifted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
None of the other family members, who were present in the house at the time of the fire, were injured.
Efforts are still being made to bring the situation under control. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Biswas lives in his ancestral house, which is on the same premises as the family’s tobacco-making business. There are several other tobacco-making units in the same area.
The MLA was in his office, which is on the outer side of the building, but went inside when the fire broke out. Flames and thick smoke were seen billowing from the house.
Biswas, who is now in the Ritabrata Banerjee faction of TMC, was earlier in the Congress, winning the Sagardighi by-election in 2023 as the sole MLA from the party, defeating the TMC, and later switched to TMC in May of the same year.
