The Calcutta High Court has ordered an immediate halt to the demolition in Amtala, South 24 Parganas, just a day after a bulldozer razed parts of the office building belonging to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
The High Court held a special hearing to consider an urgent plea by Leaps and Bounds. The HC directed all parties to maintain the status quo until further orders or the next date of hearing.
The interim order came hours after Banerjee's company, Leaps and Bounds, moved the HC seeking urgent intervention against the bulldozer action.
According to Bar and Bench, the judge clarified that the court was not deciding the matter on its merits at this stage.
The operation began Saturday morning, with police and central forces cordoning off the office premises with guard rails.
The petitioner's lawyer claimed that the office was razed despite the petitioner claiming it possessed valid land documents.
Taking to X, Banerjee wrote, "The lawlessness in Bengal is on full display...This is not demolition- It was theft in uniform, carried out with utter contempt for the rule of law."
He further alleged that videos of the demolition showed West Bengal Police personnel carrying away laptops, printers, documents, furniture and other office equipment along with "BJP goons".
The demolition triggered a sharp political confrontation, with the TMC alleging that the action was carried out in the presence of BJP leaders.
The latest petition follows an earlier legal move by the TMC after the party office was allegedly attacked soon after the Assembly election results. The party had then approached the High Court, claiming the police failed to act.
