A 63-year-old man was killed after a tree collapsed onto a shop in Mumbai’s Kurla area during heavy rainfall on Sunday. The total death toll due to the rains in the state is now three.

Civic officials said the incident took place at about 12:40 pm near the Hindi BMC School in the Naupada area of Kurla West.

Yunus Kundawala was taken to Fauzia Hospital after he was pulled out from the debris. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Five brigade personnel, police, BEST staff and civic officials rushed to the scene to carry out a rescue operation, an official said.

CCTV footage showed the tree falling amid the heavy rains.

In another incident, an 18-year-old bike rider died after a tree branch fell on him in Mumbai's Aarey Colony. The victim, identified as Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed, was a resident of Sakinaka. He was rushed to Balaji Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

In a previous incident, eight people were injured after a full-grown tree crashed into a crowd in Santacruz West on Thursday. Eyewitnesses say that residents had assembled to inspect a tree that had earlier collapsed across the road when another tree, located inside a private property undergoing redevelopment, came crashing down on the bystanders.

Trees also fell in Dadar and Shivji Park, and waterlogging has disrupted traffic in many areas of the city. 

Meanwhile, in Nalasopara, Vasi, 20 cars were submerged after the roads flooded.

In Navi Mumbai, metal sheets from a construction site in Ghansoli flew off and fell onto parked cars on the road. Many of the cars were damaged.

The Indian Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for heavy rains in Mumbai today.

The heavy downpours can be expected throughout the rest of the day. More than 200 mm of rain has been recorded in Mumbai in just 12 hours.

The local train network is running behind schedule due to the rain. The Central Rail services are also running 15-20 minutes late. 

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has appealed that the public contact its helpline number 1916 for immediate assistance in case of an emergency. The NDRF and SDRF teams are also engaged in relief work. The administration had requested that people leave their homes only for essential work.
