Heavy rains are sweeping across all of Maharashtra, with the intensity of the downpour only set to continue during the rest of the week.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts for Saturday and Sunday.
According to forecasts, the heavy rain is likely to continue in the Konkan and Ghat areas till July 7.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in the ghat areas of Satara, Pune, and Nashik in western Maharashtra.
A red alert has been issued for Pune, Raigad, Thane and Satara for Saturday.
Meanwhile, for Sunday, Pune is set to face heavy to very heavy rains.
All educational institutions, including schools and colleges, have been closed in Palghar. People have also been warned to leave their homes only for essential work.
The NDRF has also been deployed to sensitive areas.
A landslide occurred in the Saptashrungi Gad Ghat Area of Nashik, where large boulders and debris fell on the road. There were no casualties or injuries reported.
A 17-year-old died of electrocution in the Mumbra area of Thane district. The incident occurred while she was crossing a waterlogged road to her father's shop. She died after stepping into the water, which reportedly had an electric current. The girl's family have accused the electricity department of negligence.
On Friday, Mahabaleshwar recorded the highest rainfall in the state, recording 278 mm till 8 am on Friday.
Mumbai’s Colaba and Santacruz also recorded heavy rainfall in the last three days.
The heavy rains have caused rivers and streams in the Konkan region to overflow, and the water storage in dams is increasing rapidly.
In the lower parts of Mumbai, locals report waterlogging. Waterlogging was reported at Sakkar Panchayat, Old National Market, Gandhi Market, Mahalaxmi Junction, Noor Eilahi Masjid (Chembur), Saki Naka, Welcome Hotel and Andheri Subway.
Between June 1 and July 3, Mumbai city recorded 780.7 mm of rainfall, while its suburbs recorded 819.1 mm of rainfall.
The rain is being brought by a trough persisting between the Maharashtra and Karnataka coasts.
A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is also bringing in winds from the opposite direction in the lower parts. The weather system is set to bring rain until July 7.
