One of the reasons that led Pune police to suspect the role of 22-year-old Chetan Babulal Chaudhary in Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal’s murder is his dubious phone activity. Police said Chetan’s phone showed no internet activity on June 18, the day of the murder, between 7 am and 5:40 pm, which was suspicious.
Police accuse Chetan of aiding his girlfriend, Siya Goyal, the fiancée of Ketan Agarwal, in the murder of Ketan by pushing him into a gorge at Lohagad Fort near Pune on June 18.
The investigation into the “accidental death” of Ketan turned murkier when police found out that Siya, who was engaged to be married to Ketan in November, and Chetan exchanged over 2,004 calls between them between January and June 1.
According to call details, they spoke for a total of 238 hours over the past six months, confirming the police's suspicions.
After suspicion turned into Chetan, the police tracked his movements on the fateful day. Investigation revealed that his internet was down continuously from 7 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., which caught the attention of investigating officers. It soon came to light that Chetan had left his phone at his shop intentionally to avoid anyone tracking his location and had taken one of his employees’ phones with him, according to local media reports.
The officials then thoroughly questioned every incoming caller on Chetan's phone on the day. All of them confirmed that Chetan himself had not answered any calls that day. All calls were answered by his employees. The police then questioned Chetan rigorously about the internet outage from 7 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., which uncovered evidence directly linking Chetan to the crime.
The CCTV footage showing Chetan wearing a hoodie, despite the temperature being around 33 degrees Celsius, also pointed fingers at him. The footage also showed Chetan following Ketan and Siya, walking together. “We noticed Siya suddenly looking back and, at the same time, the man in the hoodie suddenly sitting down," the official was quoted by PTI.
Chetan later confessed to the police the motive behind the murder, stating that Siya was not in favour of eloping as it would bring disrespect to her family.
