When Siya Goyal and her lover Chetan Chaudhary plotted to kill her fiance Ketan Agarwal, they were allegedly making plans to celebrate her birthday together the following day.
Ketan was killed on June 18 and Siya's birthday was on June 19. Investigators are now probing whether they hurriedly got rid of Ketan to celebrate her birthday together.
Chetan Chaudhary's family ran a business in the same city as Siya's father. Siya, 20, and Chetan, 22, both of whom were BBA dropouts, was in a relationship for around a year after they met each other through business circles. While Siya owned a bakery, Chetan operated a dry fruit business. The work brought them closer, eventually turning the business association into a romantic relationship.
They had been in regular contact for the past six months, with police records revealing that there were 2,004 calls between them during the period. A total of 238 hours were spent during the calls since January till June.
While the families arranged the marriage between Ketan and Siya, she did not reportedly want to call off her engagement, fearing it would bring disrespect to her family. Instead, they conspired to eliminate Ketan instead.
The couple was set to marry in November, police said. The two families had booked a palace in Jaipur for ₹17 crore and arranged two private plane to fly in wedding guests. Even on the day of his death, Ketan was planning a grand celebration for Siya's birthday, booking 40 rooms at a luxury hotel.
After previous failed attempts to kill Ketan, Siya and Chetan on June 18 met at a Pune cafe to chalk out the final plan. As per plan, she lured Ketan to Lohagad Fort, saying she wanted to go for an outing for her upcoming birthday. Chetan, who covered his head with a hoodie in the scorching heat, followed the couple. When they reached an isolated spot, Siya and Chetan pushed Ketan into the deep gorge below.
Both have been arrested in the murder of Ketan, who was the director of his father's real estate firm.
