The victim was abducted from a pavement in Mehrauli while sleeping with her family and was subsequently taken to a secluded area on the Gurugram-Faridabad Road where she was raped and strangled. On Tuesday morning, police arrested a 29-year-old cab dirver driver from South Delhi’s Chhatarpur on suspicion that he kidnapped, raped, murdered and dumped the body of a 10-year-old girl.

The accused, Badroppingshu Kumar Singh, was held at Vikaspuri after he dropped off a passenger after the murder. he hails from Bihar’s Chhapra and moved to Gurugram for work.

The 10-year-old victim was sleeping with her parents and two siblings on a pavement in Mehrauli, South Delhi, when she was abducted by the cab driver.

The child’s screams woke her father, who saw the vehicle and ran after it.

“By the time she woke up, she was taken inside the car. I picked up a stick and ran after them, but the driver fled the spot within a minute. I immediately made calls for help,” the father said.

The father then dialled the Police Control Room, which led to the beginning of a four-hour-long search operation involving scanning CCTV footage and tracking the vehicle’s movement. About 20 police teams tracked the car to find the accused.

When police reviewed footage, they saw that the vehicle was parked at a location for close to an hour. It arrived at around 4 am, and the girl was kidnapped at around 5 am. The accused was reportedly in the area to pick up passengers, but decided to kidnap the girl when he saw her.

Using GPS and the accused person’s mobile location, the police traced the car to Vikaspuri in West Delhi.

After he kidnapped her, he took her to a secluded area 20 kilometres away on the Gurugram-Faridabad Road. He then took the girl to the woods where her raped her and strangled her using a scarf.

He abandoned her body at the crime scene.

After the killing, the accused returned to doing his work. He picked up a passenger from Gurugram and dropped them at Vikaspuri before he was arrested within four hours.  

When he was taken to the crime scene, he had attempted to escape from police custody and was shot in the leg by an officer.

"He had picked up and dropped a passenger after the crime and appeared to be behaving normally, showing no indication of what he had done," a police source said.

Police said that the accused already had a history of assault and fighting cases registered against him in Bihar.

He also has a wife and two children in Bihar.

The family of the victim conducted her cremation on Tuesday amid heavy police deployment.

the family was inconsolable and was supported by relatives as they broke down, PTI reported. Many of the relatives also fainted at the cremation.

The father of the victim had also said that his daughter was recently enrolled in a government school in Delhi and that she was excited about studying.

“I got her admission only after a great struggle. Earlier, I did not have the required documents. Slowly, we managed to get them made and enrol her. She wanted to study,” He said.

The area is home to many other homeless people who live in makeshift homes. A local security guard in the area said that the stretch was unsafe for women and children due to the presence of “drunkards and drug addicts” who harass people, especially women.
