Four murders within a 48-hour span in poll-bound Punjab have triggered a severe political storm, with the BJP launching a sharp attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over its alleged failure to maintain law and order. BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra directly questioned AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, about corruption and the state's security. The incidents involved a social media influencer in Amritsar, a former sarpanch in Ludhiana over a land dispute, another former sarpanch in Ludhiana due to an old rivalry, and a former sarpanch in Bathinda being axed to death.

A series of four murders in a span of 48 hours has triggered a political storm in poll-bound Punjab. The BJP on Monday slammed the deteriorating law and order situation in the border state, which is currently ruled by the Aam Aadmi Party.

"Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party, and Bhagwant Mann should clarify how much of a scam has taken place, to what extent their own secretary is involved, and how he (Mann) himself is involved in corruption," BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said while addressing a press conference in the national capital.

"As far as law and order is concerned, we know what the situation in Punjab has been since the AAP came to power (in 2022). I will not elaborate, but let me tell you, four murders have taken place in the state within just 48 hours," he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

On Saturday, Punjabi social media influencer and make-up artist Mad Sandhu was shot by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Amritsar.

The same day, two bike-borne attackers fatally shot Navjeet Singh Neetu, the 55-year-old former sarpanch of Mannewal village in Ludhiana district, allegedly over a land dispute between two families.

On Friday night, 29-year-old Laddi Khan was shot dead at Mullanpur Dakha in Ludhiana district under Ludhiana Rural Police, allegedly over an old rivalry between two groups.

Another former sarpanch, Jagtar Singh of Phoos Mandi village, was axed to death outside a liquor vend in Bathinda on Sunday evening.

Patra met the media after a lawyer identified as Nikhil Shiraf filed a PIL in the high court, which has now called for a CBI investigation into corruption charges against people close to Mann.

Punjab will head to the polling booths early next year.
