Nine people, including two women, were arrested in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat after they were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the name of a purification ritual.

The arrested individuals, residents of Dudhrej, were identified as Popatbhai Lakhabhai, Rameshbhai Manubhai, Jayantibhai Pethabhai, Bharatbhai Khatabhai, Jitubhai Dhirubhai, Pappubhai Bakabhai Parmar, Kalabhai Keshubhai, Geetaben Jayantibhai and Leelaben Khatabhai.

The incident came to light after explicit video recordings went viral on social media, where the woman was seen being subjected to extreme harassment and physical abuse.

According to the police, the woman was in an extramarital relationship with a man named Saheed. When the woman’s husband learnt about her relationship with Saheed, he reportedly tied her up at their home. However, he couldn’t find her when he returned.

The woman’s family, originally from Vapi, began to search for the couple and contacted their relatives in Surendranagar for help. The family and community members allegedly caught her with Saheed in an area near Chotila and took them for a ‘shuddhikaran’ ritual.

They were reportedly taken to a house in Dudhrej. Local media reported that the couple was beaten with wooden sticks and a truncheon. The complaint filed by the woman also alleges that Saheed was then tied to a tree with a rope. The woman was allegedly stripped, tied up and assaulted, while the man was forced to perform a sexual act on her.

The woman managed to escape from the house at one point, but the accused reportedly pursued her and tied her up. The incident was also recorded and uploaded on Instagram as a warning to others.

The police launched a search after viewing the viral video. After searching the area, the team found the woman cooking at one house.

“The moment she saw us, she began crying loudly and ran towards us, saying, 'Save me, take me away from here,'” ASP Vedika Bihani told Times Now.

The prime suspect and two other accused were also found at the spot. The main accused attempted to flee but was caught.

The accused have been booked under BNS section 70(1)(gang rape), 115(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
