An Indian Air Force Antonov AN-32 cargo plane crashed while landing at Roureah Airport in Assam's Jorhat on Saturday.

The aircraft was identified as an AN-32 carrier plane.

It reportedly crashed in the vicinity of a strategically important air base in northern Assam. IAF officials said in a statement that the plane caught fire after it landed.

The pilot is feared dead.

The accident reportedly occurred as the pilot was trying to land the craft at the air base.

“A military aircraft crashed at the Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam, during landing. The aircraft involved was an AN-31 cargo plane used for transporting supplies. The accident occurred while the aircraft was attempting to land at the airbase. There are fears that the pilot may have lost his life in the crash. Further details are awaited as rescue and investigation efforts continue at the site," said the IAF.

Rescue efforts are underway, and an emergency team is on site to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the crash is not known.
