The Trinamool Congress is facing significant internal turmoil, marked by reports of a potential no-confidence motion against Abhishek Banerjee, the party's all-India general secretary, stemming from alleged resentment over his influence and a breakdown in communication with Lok Sabha MPs. This internal strife is further exacerbated by approximately 12 MPs reportedly ready to defect, with expectations of more joining to potentially trigger a split that could extend to the Rajya Sabha, although details remain secret to avoid anti-defection laws. Adding to the party's challenges, Krishna Chakraborty resigned as the Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation after a lengthy tenure, citing personal reasons, while in the assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee has emerged as the leader of the opposition, directly targeting Abhishek Banerjee.

As it faces the first split in 28 years, the Trinamool Congress could face a fresh hurdle after reports suggest a no-confidence motion against TMC all-India general secretary and nephew of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, could be in the offing. One of the reasons cited for the current turmoil in the party is the widespread resentment against the influence of Abhishek.

Local media reports claim the TMC MPs are preparing to bring a no-confidence motion  against Abhishek's role as the leader of the Trinamool parliamentary party in the Lok  Sabha.

As per reports, the communication between the central leadership and several MPs of  the party in the Lok Sabha has broken down, and many MPs are not participating in regular party meetings or coordination processes. This has prompted questions about the discipline and unity in the parliamentary party.

Speculations are rife that as many as 12 MPs have already decided to support the rebel faction. To escape the ambit of the anti-defection law, two-thirds of the MPs will have to walk away. As of now, reports hint that at least six more MPs could join them. The split will happen by next week. However, there is still no confirmation about who the defected MPs are as the new bloc is insistent on secrecy for the sake of security. This operation is not limited to the Lok Sabha, but will be carried out in the Rajya Sabha too.

It was evident that all is not well within the party when only six MPs turned up for the protest programme organised by Mamata Banerjee. This whole situation has intensified the discussion about the future of  Trinamool in Delhi politics.

Not just this, the TMC is facing another hurdle after Krishna Chakraborty resigned as the mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation on Thursday, citing personal reasons. She had about eight months left in his term as mayor and had served as the mayor of  Bidhannagar for two terms, from 2019 to 2022, and then from 2022 to June 4, 2026.

She was a long-time associate of Trinamool Congress supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "This is entirely my personal decision. I have been in this chair for 16 years. I have no grudge against anyone. I have followed the rules to resign. I want to give some time to myself. I want to work as a councillor," Chakraborty told reporters.

Meanwhile, the situation in the assembly has become more complicated. Ritabrata Banerjee has emerged as the leader of the opposition with the support of 58 MLAs. He has targeted Abhishek Banerjee in the Assembly.

There are speculations about who will lead the break away faction of the TMC,  and the name of rebel MP Kakli Ghosh Dastidar is doing the rounds.
