The Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces significant internal turmoil and political uncertainty following a challenge by suspended MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and 57 other MLAs, who submitted a document to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Speaker to claim leadership of the party and the "jora phool" symbol, proposing Ritabrata as Leader of the Opposition, while simultaneously, the TMC announced the dissolution of all its committees and frontal organizations for introspection and rebuilding, a move that comes amidst a signature forgery scandal affecting the validity of a previous claim naming Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition, with CID investigating the alleged forgery of 14 signatures and serving a summons to TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who missed a protest march attended by fewer than 10 MLAs, signaling a precarious future for Mamata Banerjee and her party less than a month after election results.

The political future of Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its supremo, Mamata Banerjee, plunged into more uncertainty after rebel MLAs of her party, led by suspended MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, reached the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to submit a document before the Speaker Ratindra Bose with signatures of 58 MLAs to stake a claim as the authentic TMC.

The resolution document was submitted to Bose with the signatures along with the minutes of the meeting, staking claim as the larger faction of TMC. It also proposed Ritabrata as the Leader of the Opposition.

The faction will also stake claim to the party symbol, the jora phool. TMC has 80 MLAs in the 294-member state assembly, of which two, including Ritabrata and Sandipan Saha, were suspended on Monday. The BJP has 207 MLAs.

Ritabrata and Sandipan then went to the state secretariat Nabanna to attend an administrative meeting held by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Other TMC MLAs present at the administrative meeting were Ashok Deb, Javed Khan, Kunal Ghosh and Nayana Bandhopadhyay and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. Incidentally, Ghosh and Bandhopadhyay were present at Mamata’s protest March on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, TMC put out a post on social media stating that all its committees and frontal organisations stand dissolved, signalling that the party looks to introspect and rebuild itself. “After careful consideration, it has been decided that all committees of the All India Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as all its frontal organisations, shall stand dissolved with immediate effect.” Read the post.

“The party will undertake a comprehensive exercise of introspection, performance review and organisational assessment at every level. Based on the findings of this exercise, the organisational structure of the parent body and all frontal organisations will be reconstituted and announced in due course. The party remains committed to strengthening its organisation and preparing it to meet future challenges with renewed vigour and purpose.”

The TMC had submitted a letter to the assembly speaker, signed by TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on June 1st. The letter states that Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay is the Leader or Opposition, Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandhopadhyay as Deputy Speakers and Firhad Hakim as the Chief Whip.

A day ago on Tuesday, Mamata held a protest March at Dharmatala, where less than 10 MLAs and MPs of the 80 MLAs in the state assembly. The protest was against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s(BJP) bulldozer politics and hawker eviction, and her party leaders were affected by post-poll violence.

Mamata and her party stare at an uncertain future, less than a month after the assembly election results, as the Criminal Investigation Department(CID) of West Bengal investigate the signature forgery scandal.

It started with CM Suvendu Adhikari on Monday, revealing the names of Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha as the two MLAs who gave a complaint to the assembly speaker stating that signatures had been forged in the document naming Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition. As many as 14 signatures were allegedly forged as some MLAs claimed they were not present at the time of signing the document. Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee has also been served a CID summons as his name is at the end of the document. Abhishek skipped the summons on Monday, citing ill health after being heckled by locals at Sonarpur on Saturday.
