A massive fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Muzaffarpur early Thursday morning, claiming at least three lives and injuring several others.
According to officials, the blaze erupted on the fifth floor of the Prasad Hospital in the Brahmpura area at around 3:55 am. Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control, while rescue operations were launched to evacuate patients and staff trapped inside the building.
Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen said there were around 13-15 patients in the ICU, while several others were undergoing treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the time of the incident.
"Three deaths have been confirmed so far," Sen said, adding that an investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the fire. "We are trying to reach out to the kin of the deceased and other patients. The fire has been brought under control, and necessary legal action is being undertaken," Sen said.
Officials said the casualty toll could rise as details about several patients were still being ascertained.
The hospital authorities said that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze. The fire spread rapidly, hampering evacuation efforts, they said.
Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and monitoring the condition of the injured. The hospital management said it was cooperating with the administration and the enquiry.
The incident comes a day after 21 people were killed after a massive fire broke out in a hotel building in Malviya Nagar in Delhi on Wednesday.
