The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday clarified the reason why it rejected Telengana CM A. Revanth Reddy's proposed visit to the US, which forced him to return home from London.

In its bi-weekly media briefing, official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal explained that the Centre had denied permission to Reddy after it was assessed that the programme that the CM was to visit was not appropriate for the US visit.

"The programme proposed in such cases should be appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit," he told reporters at the MEA briefing.

This put a stop to CM Reddy's original plan to visit the US from London and return to Hyderabad on August 30. However, Jaiswal clarified that the Telangana CM had been given permission for the UK leg of the tour.

Though he "expressed shock" at the cancellation of the US leg of the tour—which he claimed would help in the development of Telangana, progress of the education sector, and India's Viksit Bharat initiative—he added in a statement that he would respect the decision.

The trip was planned under the state's Telangana Rising initiative, which eventually plans to transform it into a $1 trillion economy by 2034 and a $3 trillion SGDP economy by 2047—the year that India will celebrate 100 years of independence.

"I always believe that when it comes to nation building and the future of the youth, everyone should think beyond politics and elections," he noted.

Reddy has now directed officials to continue the programmes related to the US visit, which includes signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and other partnership agreements with foreign universities under the initiative.
