A minor girl died by suicide in the Singareni Colony of Saidabad in Hyderabad on Monday.
According to a family member, the girl faced emotional and mental harassment from a youth in the neighbourhood.
Relatives of the girl also claimed that she left a handwritten note that detailed the circumstances that led to her death. Family members sought a thorough investigation and demanded strict action against anyone who was found responsible.
The accused Fasiuddin, 18, has been arrested and sent to judicial remand, police told NDTV.
The exact circumstances leading to the girl’s death will be established after a detailed probe.
A case has now been registered against him for abetment to suicide and various provisions under the POCSO Act.
Multiple right-wing groups have now called for a strike in the region, alleging that the girl was harassed over ‘love jihad’ and cheated by a young man.
Both BJP leaders and members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad gathered in front of the Narayanpur regional transport depot and blocked traffic.
Shops and businesses in the area had also remained closed.
The right-wing groups alleged that the teen was a victim of a pattern of “love jihad” that targeted Hindu girls. They claimed that the accused had promised to marry the girl to win her and her family's trust.
Senior BJP leader Nagurao Namaji claimed, "In Narayanpet, Hindu girls are being trapped and misled. The accused allegedly promised to support the girl and marry her, but later pressured her to convert and marry according to Muslim customs.”
He also alleged that the girl was subject to blackmail and that a thorough investigation must be conducted.
The protesters also demanded strict punishment for the accused if he is found guilty and stronger measures that protect young women from exploitation.
Police officials have not confirmed the allegation made by the right-wing groups and urged the public not to spread rumours. They said that the matter is under investigation.
