An FIR filed against a retired judge and her son includes charges of dowry death and dowry harassment, amongst others, a news report said, quoting the Madhya Pradesh Police.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted by the Bhopal police to probe the demise of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, who was the daughter-in-law of the district judge. She passed away at her husband Samarth Singh's residence in the Hills area of the state capital on the night of May 12, Tuesday. Singh, the son of retired district judge Giribala Singh, is also a lawyer by profession, The Indian Express said in a report. The husband is currently at large.
The SIT will probe allegations of dowry harassment, physical assault, and destruction of evidence against the mother-son duo, the daily said. While Twisha Sharma's family has demanded another post-mortem examination in Delhi, the SIT said it will require a court's intervention.
Giribala Singh has been granted anticipatory bail citing her age, while her absconding son's plea for the same will be heard on Monday.
Noida-native Sharma married Singh in 2025 after meeting on a dating app. However, her family claims that soon after the couple tied the knot, the woman was harassed over dowry. When she became pregnant, the husband and his mother forced her to undergo an abortion, the daily quoted the victim's family as saying.
"On the night of May 12, Samarth Singh and his mother took Sharma to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police said they received information about the death from hospital authorities at around 11 pm," The Indian Express report read.
The police reportedly promised the victim's family that all angles and allegations will be thoroughly probed.
