Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected leader of the NDA Legislature Party in Assam, paving the way for his continuation as chief minister for a second consecutive term.

Union minister J. P. Nadda, who was present at the meeting along with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as central observers, told the media that eight proposals were received from BJP MLAs in favour of Sarma.

Other NDA allies — the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) — also supported the proposal.

NDA leaders are likely to meet the Governor later on Sunday to stake a claim to form the government.

Sarma is scheduled to take oath as chief minister on May 12 at a ceremony in Guwahati, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event will be held at the Veterinary Field, Khanapara, and is expected to be attended by chief ministers from several states, Union ministers, and industry representatives.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a third consecutive term in the state with a two-thirds majority in the Assembly elections. The BJP won 82 seats, while AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each in the 126-member House.

It will be the third successive NDA government in Assam, with the saffron party-led administration first assuming power in 2016, which was headed by Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Earlier this week, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said all departments concerned had been directed to ensure the highest level of preparedness so the swearing-in ceremony is conducted smoothly and securely, reflecting its significance.
