During the special West Bengal Assembly session on Wednesday to discuss the delimitation bills for the Howrah Municipal Corporation and Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a ₹10 crore contribution from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for flood-hit Assam and said the money would be disbursed soon to the neighbouring state.

“The situation in Assam is not good, and hence, at this time, we decided to contribute ₹10 crore from the CM’s Relief Fund towards helping Assam,” said Adhikari.

Adhikari termed the flood situation in Assam “extremely alarming”, with over 100 deaths reported. He also pointed out that several people from West Bengal reside in Assam, highlighting the deep ties between the two states.

The West Bengal CM also said that several social organisations and individuals are involved in relief and rehabilitation efforts in Assam, and West Bengal’s contribution will supplement these efforts to help the neighbouring state.

Assam has been reeling from the loss of life and property due to devastating floods for several weeks. As of Wednesday, 101 deaths had been reported, with five people missing. Around 1.3 lakh people have been affected by the floods, with 80,076 people living in relief camps. Twenty-five districts have been impacted by the floods, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Charaideo, Nagaon and Biswanath.

In the past few weeks, several people and organisations have donated to the CM’s Relief Fund in Assam, while others, including YouTubers, have helped raise money for flood relief. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said his state had been assured of help by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with no shortage of funds for flood relief and rehabilitation.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked us to do a detailed assessment. Whatever funds are required will be available. There will be no shortage of funds,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma, adding that there would be a three-layer verification process, with surveys conducted at three levels to ensure that no undeserving person becomes a beneficiary.

The assistance is expected to be provided ahead of the Durga Puja festival.
