The counting of votes in Assam across 40 centres in 35 districts in the state began on Monday. The result will determine the electoral fate of 722 candidates in Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting from the NDA stronghold of Jalukbari. Meanwhile, Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi is contesting from Jorhat against BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami.

The results will determine if the BJP-led NDA secures a third straight term or the Congress-led opposition will manage a comeback.

Early trends from the counting show that the NDA has a lead in 98 out of the total 126 constituencies.

The Congress, meanwhile, is leading in just 26 seats. The AIUDF and others are leading in two seats each.

On round three of counting, incubent BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami led with 14,007 votes in Jorhat. Gogai, meanwhile, secured 9,875 votes.

In Sivasagar, where Rajijor chief Akhil Gogoi was seeking to retain his seat, BJP’s Kushal Dowari was leading in the first round of vote counting.

In Dispur, BJP candidate Pradyut Bordoloi is leading with 17804 votes with a margin of 15290, leaving INC candidate Mira Borthakur, behind with just 2514 votes. Bordoloi had defected to the BJP just days before the candidate list was finalised. Borthakur meanwhile had switched sides in 2018. The candidates in the Dispur constituency are interesting because all of them belonged to different parties than the ones they are contesting from now.

BJP candidates are also leading in the New Guwahati LAC, central Guwahati.

Meanwhile, Asom Gana Parishad candidate Tapan Das is leading in Dimora.
