Breaking the state’s tradition of alternating governments, the Kerala legislative assembly election 2021 took a historic turn when Pinarayi Vijayan won a second consecutive term, with the LDF securing 99 of the 140 seats. The UDF, now led by V. D. Satheesan, which won 41 seats in the last state elections, hopes to reverse this trend. Banking on strong anti-incumbency, it has promised better employment opportunities and wages, and fiscal recovery amid concerns about the state’s debt.

The Left Democratic Front is led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and includes key allies such as the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Kerala Congress (Mani) (KC(M)), the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), along with smaller partners. The United Democratic Front (UDF), meanwhile, led by the Indian National Congress (INC), comprises parties such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP). The National Democratic Alliance, headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), includes allies like the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), Twenty20, and other smaller players.
Meanwhile, the NDA, led by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, sees an opening, having secured seats in the recent municipal elections and winning the Thrissur constituency in the previous Lok Sabha election. The party is attempting to steadily expand its footprint through this election in a state where it has traditionally struggled. The stakes are high, as the state witnessed a record voter turnout of 78.1 per cent on April 9.
