Is Vijay claiming credit for the record voter turnout in Tamil Nadu elections?

Vijay attributes the surge in voter turnout to the common masses entering electoral politics, while DMK says that the high turnout was not solely due to Vijay's influence

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu registered an impressive voting percentage of 85.15—its highest ever. Karur district registered the highest voting percentage of 92.62 among others, while Kanniyakumari district registered the lowest at 75.61.

Actor-turned-politician and TVK chief Vijay, who is attempting to break the decades-long tradition of DMK and AIADMK alternatively ruling the state and forming its government, seemed to claim that this huge voter turnout was made possible because of his political plunge.

In a long social media post, he said even those people who never cared about electoral politics turned out to vote.

"Politics was once thought to be only for the exceptionally skilled, the highly experienced, and those who hold positions. The magical calculations of those who confined and controlled politics within a specific boundary have been shattered by the common masses," he wrote in Tamil.

He pointed out that until now, a significant percentage of voters would not turn up at the polling booths. "However, the assembly election voter turnout on April 23, has been recorded as a peak historical event in the electoral political history of Tamil Nadu," he noted.

Vijay said it is impossible not to be amazed by the sight of families, with their children, coming to vote at the polling booths, similar to the crowds seen in temples, even as he thanked people of Tamil Nadu who reside in other states and foreign countries to cast their vote.

The meaning of 'election festival' and 'democracy festival' has been truly understood only yesterday, he said and added that this was only the beginning.

Further, he thanked his "family" (the entire electorate), saying, "I offer my humble and grateful salutations to the people of Tamil Nadu, who have given meaning to the electoral politics of Tamil Nadu: my grandmother, mother, elder sister, younger sisters, my grandfather, father, elder brother, younger brothers, and all my family relatives.

"Especially, to my little friends who have guided our family, this is a special greeting and thanks from your Uncle Vijay."

His remarks come even as the DMK came out with a clarification saying the huge voter turnout was not because of the presence of Vijay, but because of SIR.
