In a shocking incident, a 48-year-old man has allegedly killed both his 11-year-old twin daughters by slitting their throats with a sharp object on Sunday.
Police have now arrested Sashi Ranjan Mishra, the accused, who works as a medical representative.
Early on Sunday, he called the police and informed them that he had murdered his daughters.
He was living with his wife, Reshma and their twin daughters, Riddhi and Siddhi and a six-year-old son at the Trimoorti Apartment in Kidwai Nagar.
Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal told PTI, “A police response vehicle (PRV) received a call around 4.30 am about the murder of twin sisters. On reaching the flat, the PRV personnel found both girls lying dead in a pool of blood, while the accused was present inside.”
Police said that the accused hailed from Bihar and his wife is from Siliguri in West Bengal.
“Prima facie, the father appears to be mentally disturbed. Further investigation is underway,” Lal said.
Police say that the girls were attacked while they were asleep. The motive remains unclear.
Authorities say that the mother is still in shock.
Police said that he suspected that his wife had an affair and that he would often tell her that she should live with their son and that he would take care of the daughters.
Reshma said that Shashi was suffering from depression and had placed multiple CCTV cameras in their home. She also told police that he used to beat her every day under the influence of alcohol, and he would not let her enter the girls' rooms or his room.
He also used to remain inside the room with his daughters and make them watch the footage on the screen outside.
On Saturday night, Shashi had taken the children to bed. Rehma had watched him on the screen and said that he spoke to someone on the phone for a long time. At around 2:30 pm, he took one of the daughters to the washroom. After they returned to the room, the lights were switched off. The call to the police was made two hours later.
Police found both children in a pool of blood with their throats slit.
The bodies have been sent for a postmortem. Police are probing the main reason behind the killings. Reshma has sought an immediate death penalty for her husband.
