The violent protests by factory workers in Noida have prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to take swift action by approving a wage increase across various worker categories.
On Monday night, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave his approval to a decision made by a high-powered committee to raise the minimum salaries for workers in the region.
In Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, unskilled workers will now receive Rs 13,690 per month, up from Rs 11,313. Semi-skilled workers will earn Rs 15,059, while skilled workers will see their wages rise to Rs 16,868.
For other municipal corporation areas, the revised monthly wages are Rs 13,006 for unskilled workers, Rs 14,306 for semi-skilled workers, and Rs 16,025 for skilled workers, said an official release.
In the remaining districts, unskilled workers will earn Rs 12,356 per month, semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 13,591, and skilled workers will be paid Rs 15,224. The decision follows consultations with employees' bodies and labor organisations.
A large number of workers from various industrial units in Noida had been protesting to demand long-pending salary revisions. The situation escalated on Sunday when the protests turned violent, with demonstrators vandalising vehicles, damaging property, and clashing with the police in the Phase-2 and Sector 60 areas of Noida.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police have stated that the situation is now under control, urging the public not to believe rumors and to cooperate with the administration in maintaining peace. Authorities emphasised that they exercised restraint while managing the situation, despite repeated disruptions to traffic and public order caused by unruly protesters.
