A Bangladesh student, wanted in connection with the murder of a Hindu police officer last year, was arrested at Delhi airport on Thursday. The student, identified as Ahmed Reza Hasan Mehdi, was arrested by the police while he was trying to flee to Europe.
Mehdi, a resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh, was accused of murdering Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury in August 2024, during the students' uprising in Dhaka that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime.
Because BNP won the election in BD, Mehdi Hasan fled to India and is now in Delhi. Our so-called Hindutva BJP gov. is sheltering such people accused of killing BD Hindus.I urge all authorities, including @DelhiPolice to arrest him immediately and deliver justice to SI Santosh. pic.twitter.com/BuxGlZtqVy

He was deported to Bangladesh after being accused of physical abuse by police officials during detention. The immigration officials at the airport nabbed the accused while he was trying to flee the country.
A video was shot from the airport, in which Mehdi claimed that a police official had physically abused him. Reportedly, he was in police custody for around 40 minutes.
Chowdhury was killed during an attack on a police station. Later, his body was found hanging from a tree. The nationwide movement in Bangladesh led to multiple incidents of arson and looting in several parts of the country.
Reportedly, Mehdi's video claiming responsibility for the cop's killing had gone viral back then.
Chowdhury was married less than a year when the violent protests broke out in Dhaka demanding Hasina's ouster. His wife was pregnant when the incident took place. Three months later, a son was born to Chowdhury's wife.
On the day of the Baniachang police station attack, students and villagers organised a march to protest deaths elsewhere. As they approached the police station, the cops opened fire, killing six people. The police station was set on fire following the escalation.
