A 24-year-old woman, who was an employee at a private firm in Gurgaon, died after a car allegedly driven at high speed by a police head constable rammed into the e-rickshaw in which she was travelling near the Kali Paltan Bridge in Ambala Cantonment.
The incident happened on Wednesday evening. According to media reports, she was thrown onto the road and subsequently crushed by the car.
The deceased, identified as Nikita Bajaj, had arrived in Ambala earlier on Wednesday from Delhi along with her brother.
The police said the brother and sister took the e-rickshaw from the Cantonment area to reach Ambala City for a function.
As the e-rickshaw neared the city, the Honda City car, allegedly driven at high speed by the accused, rammed into it from behind.
According to police, the impact of the collision caused the woman to fall onto the road, following which the car went out of control and ran her over, news agency PTI reported. She was taken to a government hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Some eyewitnesses alleged that the head constable was in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident. The police, however, said the matter is under investigation.
Some people present at the spot caught the driver and handed him over to the police. The e-rickshaw driver also alleged that the car was being driven at high speed.
“The car was being driven by a policeman at high speed. As a result of the impact, the woman fell on the road, and the car being driven by the policeman ran over her," The Times of India quoted the e-rickshaw driver as saying.
The father of the deceased demanded a fair probe and strict legal action against the accused. Relatives of the deceased staged a protest at the hospital where the woman was taken, demanding that the medical examination of the accused be conducted in the presence of the media.
