Aurangabad election results: 5 latest updates as Chandrakant Khaire's nephew wins, relief for Shinde Sena

The BJP was leading in the elections to the municipal corporations of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and Nanded in Maharashtra's Marathwada region, while the Congress dominated the Latur civic body

The BJP and ally Shiv Sena were ahead in the high-stakes Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections, as per trends in 210 of 227 wards, after the counting of votes began on Friday morning. There was no official confirmation from the State Election Commission, but TV channels said the BJP was leading in 92 wards in Mumbai, while the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, was ahead in 26 wards. Going by the trends, the Mahayuti alliance is poised to cross the majority mark of 114 needed to wrest power in the BMC.

A voter turnout of 54.77 per cent was recorded in the elections held for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra a day before, with the newly formed Ichalkaranji civic body logging the highest polling percentage at 69.76 per cent, the poll body said on Friday.

In Pune, the BJP has left the NCP way behind. It was leading in 43 seats, followed by the Congress on 7, the NCP on 5, and the NCP (SP) on 3 seats. In Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP was leading in 70 seats, while the NCP, led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, was leading in 40 seats.

As the results of the municipal corporations across Maharashtra are coming out, the BJP has emerged as the party to have won the highest number of seats. While the saffron party has already registered wins in 920 seats, Shiv Sena (Shinde) has won 237 seats. The Congress is third with 172, while Shiv Sena (UBT) is fourth with 124 wins, Marathi media reports said. The Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP secured 110 wins, while the Sharad Pawar faction has won close to 20 seats. Raj Thackeray's MNS is limited to 11 seats at the time of compiling this report.

  • In the BMC's Ward 111, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Deepak Sawant emerged as the winner, beating the BJP's Sarika Pawar.
  • Darshana Khotkar, daughter of Shiv Sena MLA Arjun Khotkar, has won from ward number 16 of the Jalna Municipal Corporation.
  • In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Chandrakant Khaire's nephew Sachin Khaire won, while the  Shiv Sena (Shinde) district chief, Rajendra Janjal, won from ward number 22.
  • Geeta Bhandari and Sakina Sheikh of Shiv Sena (UBT) won BMC Wards 32 and 124 respectively.
  • Former minister Tanaji Sawant’s son, Giriraj Sawant, lost Pune Ward 37.
